Many organisms are becoming endangered because of human activities. A few examples of endangered species in freshwater biomes are mussels, crayfish, stoneflies, dragonflies, and damselflies. Mussels are basically large freshwater clams, and crayfish are nocturnal crustaceans that resembles small lobster and lives in freshwater. Also, stoneflies are an aquatic insect that have flatten bodies and are often used for bait when people fish, and dragonflies and damselflies are long bodied predatory species with transparent wings, except damselflies have weak flight. Moreover, about two thirds of mussels, half of the crayfish population, forty percent of the stonefly population and eighteen percent of the dragonfly and damselfly populations are at risk of extinction. In addition, the majority of these organisms live in rivers, lakes and ponds like the Missouri River and the Lake of the Ozarks. In these habitats they all occupy different niches like the mussel is a primary consumer, crayfish is a scavenger/ tertiary consumer and the dragonfly, damselfly and stonefly are all secondary consumers.
Reasons for Extinction
They are extinct for numerous reasons like pollution from industrial and agricultural run - off, dams, erosion and the nonnative species that have moved onto the area. This is important know because they all contribute countless things to the economy and environment as well. Many of them are used as an indicator species , which helps environmentalist measure the well being of the water. For example, the dragonfly's presence represents fresh water, and changes within water ecosystems, and the damselfly's presence helps environmentalist measure water flow and vegetation.
Things being done to save the Endangered Species in the Freshwater Biome
There are hundreds of environmental organizations working together to promote environmental conservation. Moreover, there are thousands of international and national laws put in place to protect animals from becoming extinct. Plus, zoological parks throughout the world have established endangered species breeding programs in the hope of reintroducing animals back into their natural environments. In spite of these efforts, many species of animals and plants become extinct every year.
